Samsung’s Older Galaxy Watches Still Waiting for Updates: What’s Going On?

Samsung's Older Galaxy Watches Still Waiting for Updates

It’s been months since Samsung rolled out any updates for its older Galaxy Watch models, and users are beginning to wonder: where’s the love? While the company is still releasing security patches for its newer devices, the lack of software updates for older Galaxy Watches is starting to feel like a forgotten promise.

Samsung’s Slow Update Rollout

Samsung’s smartwatch lineup is known for being one of the most reliable on the market, but the company is currently facing some serious delays when it comes to updates for older Galaxy Watch models. The tech giant has been hard at work on One UI 7.0, the next major software update based on Android 15. Originally expected to be available by now, the rollout of One UI 7.0 has been pushed back, and Samsung is now planning to release it in early 2024.

But that’s not the only delay. Along with One UI 7.0, Samsung’s next major Wear OS update, Wear OS 5 with One UI 6, is still not available for many older models. While the latest Galaxy Watch 6 series is already receiving updates, other watches like the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 5 are left with the same March 2024 security patch — meaning they haven’t seen an update in over six months.

What About Wear OS 5?

Here’s where things get frustrating for Galaxy Watch owners: Wear OS 5 with One UI 6.0 has already started rolling out to newer models like the Galaxy Watch 6, Galaxy Watch 7, and Galaxy Watch Ultra. However, this update hasn’t yet made its way to the older Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 5 models, even though it’s been in beta testing for some time.

So, if you own a Galaxy Watch 4 or 5, it’s likely that you’re still running Wear OS 4, while others with the newer Watch models are already enjoying Wear OS 5. In fact, beta testers in the U.S. have begun receiving the update, but there’s no clear timeline for when other regions will see the rollout — let alone when older models will get their turn.

Samsung’s Struggles with Software Updates

It’s not just the Galaxy Watches that are getting delayed updates. Samsung’s software division has been facing some challenges lately, especially when it comes to keeping up with the release schedule. The delay of One UI 7.0 is a clear sign of the company’s struggles in this area. And while there have been some teasers and sneak peeks of the update, Samsung hasn’t been able to give users concrete information on when it will be available.

Given these delays, many Galaxy Watch users are wondering when they can expect to see Wear OS 5 and One UI 6 on their older devices. Unfortunately, Samsung hasn’t confirmed a specific date. However, there’s a good chance that the rollout for older watches will come in early 2024, possibly in conjunction with the release of One UI 7.0 for Galaxy smartphones.

What Does This Mean for Galaxy Watch Owners?

If you’re still rocking an older Galaxy Watch, it might be time to start getting used to the idea that updates may take longer than expected. While the newest models like the Galaxy Watch 6 and Watch 7 are receiving timely updates, it’s clear that Samsung’s focus is shifting toward newer releases.

That said, there’s still hope on the horizon. Samsung has been teasing a future where older watches will catch up to the latest software, but it’s unclear exactly when that will happen. Until then, Galaxy Watch 4 and 5 owners will just have to keep waiting.
